Hunter - Sept 22-23, 2007

This was the weekend to build the tiny porch and close on a few things with Paul. He and his workers were supposed to be there Saturday and hopefully help me. They finally got the porch beam (5 weeks later) and they put it up. Looks fantastic. Very happy Paul was adamant at finding a good solution. I could have been persuaded for a worse solution. Thx Paul for sticking to your guns. No resolution to the leaking door issue. Paul and John tell me it happens. I say bull. At home we have 2 doors with NO porch and NEVER it leaked. Must be fixed. Paul's guys left at noon, but I asked Noah and his father to stay, they did and it was very helpful. Everything took a lot longer however. So by the time we had the first (and only) bent dry fitted on the porch it was 4pm and a major joint was not working. and i had not drilled the peg holes yet, and the 2 guys told me they had to leave in 20 minutes to go a family function. What was I to do? Like some ancient Greek play, John came to the rescue just then. He showed up and had his chisels. You've got to admire a man that travels with his chisels. things went alot faster with him, basically because it was getting late and time to get this up (we had gotten the house bent up earlier). some minor adjustment and it was perfect. I asked john does he always have problems fitting the joints when it goes up. he emphatically said .... no! After we packed it up we had dinner at the last chance cheese in tannersville. we were too grungy looking for the swiss chalet and had a good time speaking of timberframing and geometry and useful things. But before I went home, had to stop by Meltz lumber to get my porch posts. Wow, a wild place. like from a previous century. took 1 hour to find it, there were so many large buildings in the facility and a tremendous amount of wood. pictures don't do justice. The next day leslie and eva came with me to put the oil on the wood. I don't want it to get wet or exposed from the sun without the coating. I was hoping i could frame out the rafters, but ran out of time. Guess what, the mayor of hunter showed up. Said the place look fantastic. He said he like the old house and was very sad to see it go down. He hoped that it didn't mean the place was abandoned. anyway...
